Week 12 | Uganda

The rainy season is in full swing these days! With some days raining inches at a time! I don't really know because we don't have a gauge but it's just a whole lot of rain and the roads are starting to washout in some areas. And it always makes for interesting adventures when driving to and from school. Like earlier this week.. It had rained so heavily one night and there was just water everywhere and we knew the roads were going to be bad. So to be on the cautious side we took the longer route to school to by pass the swamp area that the usual road pass through. This road was also not good and quite slippery, but we made it. Made it so close to school and here sits a big sugar cane truck and we could not get around him, the road is to narrow and I couldn't go into the ditch to get around it. Everyone was gathering around to see what we were going to do. It was quiet embarrassing. Well it was apparent that the only thing to do was go back. So we back down the road a ways till I found a flat place where I could turn around. And so we head back to the main road and decide to try our only other option. But before we could reach the main road, someone else has gotten themselves stuck and had made a big mess. So here we are just sitting in the middle of the road, closed in by 2 other vehicles, late to school, wondering what in the world we are going to do. I even got out and started scouting out some possible options of taking the car down a foot path. But quickly decided that would probably make matters worse. Then some boda boda guy came along and seen our predicament and said to follow him. And we found ourselves heading down a little short cut that was clearly made for foot traffic and motorcycles. But guess what it worked and we got back to the main road to our only other option of driving to school on the road we were trying to avoid. But surprisingly it ended up being fine, missus the part where I almost entered someones garden and had to do some skilled maneuvering and we found ourselves safe and sound at school 45 mins later.

The view to the south from the 2nd story of the school building.

Grabbed a few snapshots of one of the classes enjoying their library time. It's their favorite class period!

With the rain the crops are certainly, but also the weeds are too! The greater part of this week we have spent weeding the corn and beans and we still aren't finished!

Apparently the wet season is when the snakes are more prevalent too! This now headless little cobra was about the size of a pencil but oh so dangerous and deadly if bitten! And it was just a little to close to me! Needless to say I was on pins and needles and more aware of my surroundings the rest of the day!

Little Talik (sp?) trying his hand at slashing!

This is his mama, one of the support staff at school and so her little boy tags along where ever she goes.
Here we are just enjoying a porridge break from weeding.

Porridge is one of those things you're just not to sure about trying or eating when you get here for fear of whats floating inside or the cups and containers you're using. But now its one of the things you look forward to!

It pretty much just corn flour ground a certain way, & water. Maybe a little sugar and salt..I'm not sure. But one thing I can say is that if you add a bit of margarine in it, it really taste good!

More birthdays!! One of my favorite things is taking pictures with the children whose sponsor I know and sending them a picture.

Master Willie sure knows how to involve the class in the celebrations.

I amazed the kids by putting a magnet on either side of a paper and moving the bottom one that the top on will also move. This kept them busy for some time.

So confused...haha

I will leave you with a smile from Shamira!
